Bring Me a Dream

This Week's Sample Chapter

(This was one of my favorite chapters in the whole book to write)

Chapter Sixty-One

“Mommy, why are you looking at man’s shoes?”
“Men’s, Eddie.”
“I know, but why?”
“Because I want to buy a pair.”
“I know, but why man’s?”
“Men’s, and I need a pair.”
“Of man’s shoes?”
“Men’s shoes, yes.”
“But why?”
“Eddie, can you please stop asking so many damned questions?” she blurted more callously than she had intended.
Eddie snapped his head away from her and jutted out his pouty lip. He ignored her hand as she reached out in a peace offering. Marisol tried to console him with a hug and he just pulled away from her and stormed off to the back of the small shoe store in the mall. She sighed and went back to looking for the right size, brand and color that Graham had demanded from her. Every minute or so she glanced back to see how Eddie was doing. He was sitting under a rack of leather coats still pouting.
Marisol smiled at a woman and her little daughter who came bounding into the store. She was a little bundle of energy like Eddie. Her eyes were full of curiosity and she had just as many questions for her mother as her son had for her. A surge of guilt coursed through her and she made up her mind, that bastard was getting the very next pair of shoes she found in his size no matter what.
She took the moment of respite while her son was avoiding her to catch a breather and forced herself to think about Geneva. Marisol had been constraining herself from dwelling on the grim situation to keep it from eating her up inside. She had to focus on playing his game just long enough, until the very first opportunity of escape presented itself.
Tears streamed down her face as she recalled the damaged flesh of her sister’s tongue. Medical technology has advanced so far that maybe there was a procedure, or maybe a prosthetic. Maybe doctors would be able to fix Geneva and make her alright. Marisol knew, her sister would never be right again. Even if the doctors were able to restore her speech, how would she ever be able to mentally recover from what this maniac had done to her? Hell, Marisol wasn’t so sure she would survive this, let alone recover from it herself.
“Hi, my name is Madison, what’s yours?” the young girl reached her delicate hand out to shake her new friend’s.
Eddie just stared at her.
She readjusted her smile and tried again, “Hi.”
Eddie stared right through her.
“Fine, if you don’t want to be friends, then neither do I,” she stomped her foot, spun on the balls of her feet and stormed away.
Eddie looped a security cable from one of the leather jackets around the little girl’s throat and cinched it down as hard as he could. His arms trembled from exerting even more power than his little arms possessed. He grinned and giggled as he choked the life out of her. As death neared, panic and the natural instinct for survival kicked in and Madison began flailing about. She tried to scream but couldn’t, she had no breath to scream with. She lashed and kicked out until finally her struggling paid off. The cable slipped through Eddie’s little hands just enough for her to get a breath.
“Mommy!” her shrill scream shrieked through the store.
Marisol spun in the direction of the scream, leapt to her feet and ran to where she had last seen Eddie. She was the first to react, the first to make it to the two children and the first to see what had actually happened. Madison’s mother joined the fray a few seconds later.
“What the hell!” Madison’s mother screamed, snatching her daughter away from Marisol.
“They were playing, she must have gotten tangled up in the security cable,” Marisol explained.
“Uh, uh, he choked me,” Madison argued and pointed at Eddie who had his back to the group.
“No, honey, he was just trying to help you.”
“Bullshit! Let’s go Madison, you have to be careful who you make friends with, there are some real creeps in this world.”
“Creeps? My God, he’s only six years old,” she called after the woman as she stormed off with her daughter in tow, “Bitch,” Marisol muttered under her breath.
She turned around to talk to Eddie and was thrown back on her heels. He had breathed on the mirror and drawn a smiley face in the condensation. Her little boy looked back at her with the eyes of a stone, cold killer.
Disobey me and you will lose your son forever!
Tears welled up and Marisol suddenly felt nauseated. There was no escape, none.
